Migrant workers help Rlys launch girders in Manipur

New Delhi, April 28 (IANS) Amid the nationwide lockdown to combat the spread of novel coronavirus (Covid-19), the Indian Railways on Tuesday said that all the girders of one of the mega bridges in Manipur was launched by the stranded migrant labourers successfully.

The national transporter in a tweet said, "Due to lockdown workers got stranded in remote areas of Manipur. They chose to work after work permission was received. Due to their commitment to work, all girders were launched on the bridge over the Barak river having 75-meter tall piers in Manipur on April 26."

The railway bridge over the Barak is one of the important bridges to connect Manipur to other parts of the country with the rail route.

The national transporter is hopeful of competing the project of connecting Manipur with the rest of the country by March 20222.

Following the nationwide lockdown all the construction work was stopped.

However, after some relaxation after April 20 onwards, works started at several places across the country where there was no case of Covid-19.

On Tuesday, the total number of Covid-19 cases in India rose to 29,435 with 1,543 new cases in the last 24 hours. So far 937 people have lost their lives to the pandemic across the country.
