8/9/1942	The Congress at its Bombay session passed the famous Quit India resolution, calling for mass struggle on non-violent lines on the widest possible scale, under the leadership of Gandhiji. He stressed that ""We shall either free India or die in the attempt; We shall not live to see the perpetuation of our slavery""; popularly known as ""Do or Die"". But before the Congress could start the movement, the government arrested all the major leaders and the Congress was declared illegal. Spontaneous popular revolts broke out with the battle cry of 'British Quit India'.
7/21/1977	K.S. Hegde elected Lok Sabha Speaker.
8/30/1983	Indian National Satellite (INSAT-1B) launched. This was also a multi-purpose communication and meteorology satellite, which served for more than its design life of seven years. It was launched by a US Space Shuttle.

4/11/1999	India successfully test-fires the extended range ''Agni-II'' missile, bridging a key gap in its minimum nuclear deterrent profile.

2/14/1807	Khanderao Holkar, one of the sardars in Peshwa kingdom, passed away.
10/20/1962	The first IAFunit No. 2 squadron re-equipped with the Gnat at Ambalan and No.9 squadron soon followed suit.
11/7/1950	King Tribhubana Bir Bikram of Nepal flees palace for refuge in Indian Embassy at Kathmandu.
9/8/1965	Pakistan commenced its drive into the Indian Punjab using its 1-armoured division with the aim to foreclose India's options north of the Beas-Sutlej river line, after foiling the southern most divisional attack mounted by 4-Mountain Division.
